The Sports Castle
About This Property
Built in 1926 as the Cullen Thompson Motor Company Chrysler showroom and designed by noted Denver architect Jacques Benedict, the Sports Castle at 1000 N. Broadway became a defining piece of Broadway’s former automobile row. In 1971, Gart Bros. Sporting Goods transformed the building into its flagship store, later operating as Sports Authority until closing in 2016. Since then, the 50,474 sq ft landmark has seen limited activation while ownership pursued redevelopment strategies. Now, outdoor retailer evo, which currently operates a store one block north on Broadway, is advancing plans to relocate and expand into the historic structure. The proposal centers on preserving the iconic terra cotta façade and interior ramps while modernizing the building with new retail, service, food and beverage space, rooftop recreation, and accessibility upgrades, positioning the property for a new chapter as an experiential retail and community destination.
