The Westwood Recreation Center reached its topping out last week, marking a major step toward opening in late summer 2027. The ceremony at 4320 Morrison Rd brought out residents, project partners, and city leaders who have pushed for this investment for years. Community members were invited to sign the final beam before it rose into place, a moment filled with pride for a neighborhood that has waited a long time to see this project move forward. We joined them and signed the beam alongside families, seniors, and youth who will soon use the space.
Councilwoman Jamie Torress spoke on the importance of the center as a long overdue resource for District 3. Councilwoman Daisey Rocha Vasquez was also in attendance, reinforcing support for continued investment along Morrison Rd. The project is funded through the Elevate Denver Bond Program and includes 40,000 square feet of recreation, fitness, and gathering space. Public input shaped the design, from gym and pool features to flexible rooms that will serve youth programs, cultural events, and community meetings. Artwork from Ratha Sok will be installed on the property, adding a local creative voice to the site.
The recreation center is expected to open in late summer 2027 and is positioned to become a social anchor for Westwood. For residents who signed the beam, the moment represented more than construction progress. It marked recognition, momentum, and the start of a new chapter for the community.
