Recovering Hipster has officially opened its doors at 2239 E Colfax Ave, taking over the former Sweets and Treats candy shop with a concept centered on sustainability, inclusivity and local community.
The shop opened Feb. 7 after founder Kayte spent months searching for the right location between Colorado Boulevard and York Street. A Denver native and East High School alum, Kayte built the business from early reselling, thrift finds and garage sale sourcing. She first launched online, later expanding into a small setup at Stanley Marketplace, where she operated for about 14 months before making the move to Colfax.
Before fully committing to the business, Kayte spent time in New York City working in corporate roles, where she realized reselling and curation was her long term path. Opening on Colfax, directly across from East High, marks a full circle moment, with some employees also alumni of the school.
Recovering Hipster now operates as a consignment store supported by a network of all women and LGBTQ curators. The shop offers a wide mix of vintage and contemporary goods, with a focus on sustainable retail and local sourcing. Inventory includes clothing, jewelry, vinyl and hand poured soy products, alongside antique brass pieces sourced from Habitat for Humanity and items from local makers like Brass Wolf Workshop.
The store emphasizes inclusivity, carrying sizes from infancy through 6XL and rejecting traditional gender distinctions in clothing. Local contributors include a young single mother who produces all jewelry sold in the shop, reinforcing the store’s mission to support small scale creators.
Operating hours run from noon to sundown on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Recovering Hipster also partners with local organizations to donate goods, further embedding the business within the East Colfax community. Early reception from the neighborhood has been strong, signaling continued momentum for locally driven retail along the corridor.
