The I-70 Floyd Hill Project, which commenced in July 2023, represents a major overhaul aimed at enhancing the I-70 corridor stretching eight miles from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs in Colorado. This project is designed to significantly improve safety and traffic flow while ensuring environmental sustainability. A key component of this initiative is the addition of a third lane to westbound I-70, which will operate as a tolled Express Lane.

This addition is expected to alleviate the notorious congestion in this corridor. Alongside this, the project involves the reconstruction of several bridges that have deteriorated due to heavy use, thereby enhancing the safety and reliability of the infrastructure.

Moreover, the project includes the construction of a missing two-mile section of the frontage road between US 6 and the Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway interchanges, which will improve both access and emergency response capabilities. Additionally, an extended on-ramp from US 6 to eastbound I-70 is being built to facilitate safer and more efficient merging for slow-moving vehicles.

Improvements in traffic flow and access at various interchanges are also planned, alongside environmental measures such as enhancing wildlife connectivity and the Clear Creek Greenway trail. These efforts are geared towards improving air and water quality and stream conditions, contributing to the overall sustainability of the region.

Completed Recreation Rendering (per CDOT)

The project is organized into three main phases: The East Section, which began in July 2023 and is expected to conclude by summer 2026; The Central Section is set to start in fall 2024 and end by late 2028; and The West Section will commence in spring 2024, with a planned completion by summer 2028. Throughout the duration of the construction, the Colorado Department of Transportation is committed to minimizing disruptions by managing traffic effectively and keeping the public informed of any necessary detours or closures.
