Construction on the I-70 Floyd Hill project has entered a critical phase, with crews now building a new westbound bridge directly over active traffic.
The $905 million project spans 8 miles between Evergreen and Idaho Springs and is designed to address one of the most congested and crash-prone segments of I-70. Work began in 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2029.
Current progress is centered on the new elevated westbound alignment. Crews are constructing a segmental bridge from concrete piers, extending the structure outward while maintaining traffic below. Rock excavation, slope stabilization, and roadway grading are ongoing across the corridor.
Early improvements are already visible. Portions of the eastern segment have been widened and repaved, and large sections of mountainside have been removed to straighten curves and reduce grades.
The full project includes adding a third westbound express lane, rebuilding aging bridges, improving frontage road connections, and creating safer emergency access routes.
Impacts remain significant. Drivers should expect regular lane closures, traffic holds for blasting, and extended delays through at least 2026 as the most complex work continues.
Once complete, the project is expected to improve travel times, reduce crashes, and increase reliability on a corridor that serves both daily commuters and regional traffic to the mountains.
