The end of an era is underway at 123 Speer Boulevard.
Once home to Denver7, the brown “brutalist” landmark that sat at Speer, Lincoln, and 6th is being torn down.
Demolition crews from Milender White are expected to spend the next 12 weeks clearing the site, closing the book on more than five decades of local television history.
Denver7 moved into the space in 1969, broadcasting stories that shaped the city for generations. In recent years, the building became better known for graffiti tags than breaking news, a visible reminder of its uncertain future. A 2021 bid for landmark status failed, opening the door for redevelopment.
Miami-based developer PMG is now preparing to bring Society Denver, a two-tower residential community, to the site.
Plans call for a 14-story building with 409 apartments and a 12-story tower with 154 apartments. Together, that’s more than 560 new homes, along with 13,500 square feet of retail and 480 parking spaces.
The $35M purchase in 2021 secured a nearly 100,000-square-foot site with rare frontage on Speer, Lincoln, 7th Avenue, and Sherman.
Once complete, Society Denver will anchor the southern stretch of Lincoln Street at Speer, just a couple blocks down from 808 N Lincoln, where an 18-story, 295-unit tower is already rising.
For longtime Denverites, it’s a bittersweet farewell to a piece of broadcasting history. For the city, it’s a chance to add housing and retail to a high-profile corridor. Either way, 123 Speer is about to make headlines again.
