New ownership capital is entering the Colorado Rockies.

Greg and Carrie Penner, part of the Walton-Penner ownership group that controls the Denver Broncos, have taken a significant minority stake in the Rockies through Penner Sports Group. The deal has been approved by Major League Baseball.

The investment is reported to be around a 40% stake, making the Penners the largest minority owners in the franchise.

Despite the size of the investment, control of the team remains unchanged. The Monfort family will continue as majority owners, with Dick Monfort as chairman and CEO and Walker Monfort leading day-to-day operations.

This marks a notable expansion for the Walton-Penner group, which acquired the Denver Broncos in 2022 for $4.65 billion, one of the largest transactions in professional sports history.

The move positions the Penners among a small group of ownership entities with stakes across multiple major U.S. sports leagues, joining figures like Stan Kroenke.

For the Rockies, the deal brings in a well-capitalized partner with a recent track record of investing heavily in infrastructure, operations, and fan experience.

However, expectations around control should be tempered. The Penners are not expected to have a day-to-day role in team operations, and the Monfort family remains firmly in charge of the franchise.

The investment signals confidence in both the long-term value of MLB franchises and the Denver sports market more broadly. It also introduces new capital into a Rockies organization that has faced growing scrutiny from fans in recent years.
