1155 Alpine Ave

We’re back in Boulder at the corner of Alpine and Broadway, the City of Boulder is transforming the former Boulder Community Health property into the Western City Campus (WCC).

The WCC will be 117,000-square-foot civic hub that will consolidate city services, advance climate goals, and create a welcoming destination for the community.

Designed by ZGF, the new building will feature a refreshed exterior inspired by the Flatiron rock formations, with layered stone and perforated metal screens creating a distinctive gateway into the site. Inside, the design emphasizes daylight, transparency, and community connection.

Civic corners will frame views of the public realm, while interior graphics will celebrate Boulder’s culture and traditions, including nods to events like the annual “tube to work day.” A 62,000 SF mass timber addition will provide three floors of office space, multipurpose rooms for staff and community events, and a transparent ground level that connects seamlessly with the surrounding plaza.

Sustainability is central to the project.

Thoughtful materials, including mass timber, low-carbon concrete, and salvaged steel, combine with a rooftop solar array projected to generate nearly 40% of the building’s energy needs. With electrified systems across the campus, the WCC is expected to achieve 81% energy savings over the 2030 baseline and eliminate onsite emissions.

Beyond the building, the 2.4-acre site will introduce public plazas, landscaped gathering areas, a greenway for flood conveyance, and expanded bike and pedestrian connections.

Public art commissions, including Infinite Flow, COHABITAT, and Soo Sunny Park’s dual suspended works, will further root the campus in Boulder’s cultural and natural identity.

Construction is in progress, with completion expected in 2027. The Western City Campus at 1155 Alpine Ave is set to become Boulder’s new civic landmark.
