Denver’s culinary scene is once again in the national spotlight, with four local finalists named for the 2026 James Beard Awards, one of the industry’s highest honors.
Among the finalists is Johnny Curiel of Alma Fonda Fina, recognized for his modern approach to Mexican cuisine and growing influence in the city’s dining landscape.
Chef Penelope Wong of Yuan Wonton also earned a finalist spot, continuing her rise from pop up success to one of Denver’s most talked about kitchens.
In the beverage category, Ryan Fletter of Barolo Grill was named a finalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service. His nationally respected wine program has long positioned the restaurant as a cornerstone of Denver fine dining.
Meanwhile, Yacht Club’s McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright were recognized for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service, highlighting Denver’s growing influence beyond the kitchen and into bar and beverage innovation.
The James Beard Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of the food world,” recognize excellence across chefs, restaurants and hospitality professionals nationwide. Winners will be announced June 15 in Chicago.
This year’s finalists reflect the continued evolution of Denver as a nationally recognized food city, with strength across both culinary and beverage programs.
